I have a JD 4110. Every year after spring flood I have to drag a rake (home made) around the camp site about 1.50 acres of yard. This is to flatten out the mud wholes and cracks in the ground. I would like to know what might be better for this. I also want to remove or regenerate my yard at home. In other words starting from scratch and remove the old sod and replant my yard. So what attachment would be best for the combo of tasks I have in mind, or do I need multiple equipment. I am thinking a box blade or tiller or a disk. At this point this city boy with a great tractor and a small river camp is not sure where to put his money.
Any ideas. ????

The cheapest way is to rent an aerator that takes many plugs about the size of your index finger out of the ground and deposits them on the surface. This allows the roots to breathe and allows you feed and water them. Eventually the holes will fill in with new growth in few weeks. Another way, and I do this for clients, is I use my 6' power box rake which is sort of like a high-speed rototiller with carbide teeth on a drum rather than tilling blades on a shaft. They are also called Harley Rakes or preparators or pulverizers. You may be able to rent one locally. This will allow you to do anything from 0-6" of soil off at a time. As it travels over the ground it literally breaks up the ground and takes anything growing or not with it. Be sure to mow close to the ground first for best results. You can use a box scraper but all that will do is scrape some of the roots which may or may be what you are looking for. If you use a rototiller keep in mind that you will be fluffing up the soil and will have to regrade and compact it later. Otherwise, when it rains it will be muddy soggy mess until it settles and the air spaces subside (don't ask!). The power rake is also good for resurfacing gravel drive ways. I get $300 to resurface a 75' - 200' driveway and regrade it with the box scraper which helps compact it. Takes about 3 hours. ....

The "dont ask" from earthwrks is from experiance. I have found out the hard way also. IMO Do not use a rototiller for this. As that ground settles it will NOT settle evenly. You will be back in the same boat you were in before and maybe worse. Plus if you seed righ away with out packing it and gradng it your seed will be sporadic.
Earthwrks gave good advice in my opinion. (Considering he does this for a living I think) I would listen to him LOL ....

Oops I did it again! What size SS did your buddy have and what attachments? Tracks? Have you driven one with rubber tracks? ....

Look into the Absolute Innovation's TR-3 rake. The company will send you a VCR tape free to preview the rake in action.
